Demography Graduate Center Fellowship (deadline: 3/23/22)

The Demography Program at the CUNY Graduate Center is soliciting applications from current GC doctoral students who are interested in receiving a 3-year fellowship to pursue their demographic studies. This fellowship will be offered to a student entering their 2nd or 3rd year in the Fall of 2022.

Obligations of the Demography Fellow: Importantly, the obligations differ from those attached to the standard GCF. Each year, the fellowship recipient would serve as an apprentice (for 15 hours per week during the academic year) to a mentor drawn from the demography faculty affiliates at the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research (CIDR). This obligation takes the place of obligations, if any, associated with their previous financial support. If the student had been required to teach for their fellowship in the past, or if they had no obligation in the past, the student each year would instead now serve as a research apprentice. The student’s preferences would be considered in the assignment of the mentor. Mentor selection would aim to ensure both productivity and to initiate or augment the student’s hands-on research experience.

Further, Demography Fellows would be required to complete the Demography Certificate (which typically does not add to the courseload in the student’s home program) and to attend all CIDR-sponsored seminars/workshops. Fellows are also expected to submit a paper or poster to the Annual Meetings of the Population Association of America, funding for which will be covered by CIDR.

Students may also apply for CIDR’s Supplementary Fellowship, which provides an annual stipend of $5,000, eligible for renewal for a 2nd year.
