Joseph van der Naald was awarded 2023-2024 Center for Engaged Scholarship

Our student Josephy van der Naald was recently awarded the Center for Engaged Scholarship dissertation fellowship for the 2023-2024 academic year. The award is $30,000 and the fellowship is designed to support students whose research is politically-engaged, and oriented toward ameliorating inequality of all types, supporting democracy, and addressing environmental issues.

Fellowship Opportunities in Spring 2023

Vera-CUNY Graduate Center Summer Fellowship 2023

The Vera Institute of Justice and CUNY Graduate Center invite applications for Summer Fellows who will be based in Vera’s New York City office. These $4,000 fellowships will be offered to Graduate Center Ph.D. students from any program with research interests in criminal or immigration justice and the work of the Vera Institute. The primary responsibilities of the award winners will be to collaborate with researchers in one of Vera’s 4 centers or programs on research relating to a specific project, including but not limited to data collection, analysis, fieldwork, report writing, stakeholder engagement, and dissemination.

Fellowship recipients will work with their assigned initiative for 120 hours over the summer of 2023. While there is some flexibility in remote working, fellows will be expected to work onsite at Vera’s offices in Sunset Park Brooklyn for at least 60 hours over the course of the summer in line with Vera’s hybrid schedule. In addition, recipients will be required to attend a welcome reception at the beginning of the fellowship, to do a brief presentation on their work at the end of the summer and write a blog post about their experiences before the end of the Fall 2023 semester.

 

2023-2024 Graduate Student Public Humanities Fellowship

Humanities New York and its nine partner universities, comprising the Humanities Centers Initiative, invite grant proposals from advanced graduate students in support of public programming and projects. Grant proposals for projects that are underway or already in development are highly encouraged. Projects may be collaborations between two or more students; however, the application should designate one as the project director. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously been awarded the Humanities New York Public Humanities Fellowship. All projects must be public-facing in some way: intended for public audiences, engaging members of the public as collaborators, or partnering with community groups. Projects of any format or type will be considered; however, projects that engage with issues of social justice and equity are particularly welcome. Grantees will also have the opportunity to take part in workshops and networking events held by the HCI partners, designed to introduce them to different skillsets and to experts of the public humanities, in order to enrich their practice.

 


2023-2024 Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness Fellows Program

The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (OIRE) is seeking two Research Analysts for its Fellowship Program. OIRE is an administrative unit within the Provost’s Office at the GC. It provides leadership in the areas of institutional effectiveness, data analytics, student learning assessment, program evaluation, and regional accreditation. The OIRE Fellows Program provides vital support to the office. We seek applicants with experience, skills, and/or strong interest in working in the areas of data analytics, research, assessment, and/or higher education administration.

All full-time doctoral students in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Students holding one of the GC’s multi-year fellowships and tuition fellowships are also welcome to apply. Effective with the Fall 2023 semester, this OIRE graduate fellowship requires fellows to work a total of 450 non-teaching hours during the academic year (15 hours/week).

Compensation for the fellowship will be a minimum of $27,374 for the academic year. Fellows will be appointed to the Graduate Center payroll as Graduate Assistant Bs (GAB) at their own current rate and receive a Provost’s Award in the amount of $14,159 that will pay through the Office of Financial Aid. The GAB title provides eligibility to purchase the low-cost NYSHIP health insurance as well as in-state tuition remission for fellows who are within their first 10 registered semesters of doctoral study. Fellows who are past their 10 registered semesters of doctoral study will be eligible to receive in-state tuition remission at the Level 3 rate as per the new PSC- CUNY contract (this benefit provides for this tuition remission for a maximum of 4 semesters past the student’s 10th registered semester).

2023 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program (DDRA) funds dissertation level doctoral students to conduct research in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of 6 to 12 months. This program is sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education (ED) and is not related to the IIE Fulbright program. The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Program is for students who intend to conduct dissertation research outside of the United States and Western Europe, and is of particular interest to students in the social sciences and humanities. Students must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents to be eligible.

2023 GC Digital Fellowship

GC Digital Initiatives is searching for new doctoral students to join our dynamic team. Together, GC Digital Fellows lead week-long digital research institutes, teach workshops on technical skills, create resources for GC students and faculty, and build digital projects that make use of the affordances of emerging technology while considering the ethical, social, and political stakes. In fact, the GC Digital Fellows are twice-recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for their digital pedagogy and in the next two years will work with a research team to develop new workshops for GC students that will also be used nationally.

Graduate Center doctoral students at any level are eligible to apply, and we encourage applications from women and gender minorities and BIPOC. We hope to add strength to our program in graphic and web design, Python, and mapping; however, this is not an exhaustive list. We encourage those with other skills and interests to also apply.

 

 

2023-24 CUNY Humanities Alliance Fellowships

This fellowship requires reflection, flexibility, collegiality, and willingness to engage in educational support activities that lay crucial foundations for community college students’ learning, thriving, and success. It offers an ideal opportunity for Graduate Center students committed to public higher education, social justice, thinking about the humanities in community college contexts, and supporting CUNY undergraduates. Fellows can expect to strengthen their skills in pedagogy, programmatic support, project management, leadership, events planning, and community building that will serve them in a wide range of career pathways. Graduate fellows will be assigned to work with one of four campus partners. Fellows will also have opportunities to connect and collaborate with the Graduate Center’s Teaching and Learning Center, The Futures Initiative, and other partners throughout the CUNY system. CUNY Humanities Alliance Fellowships offer annual compensation of approximately $29,000 (or more, depending on prior service or appointment history with the Graduate Center). All applicants must be a full time Graduate Center doctoral student, in good academic standing, and entering years 3-5 of study in Fall 2023.

The Futures Initiative is seeking applications from Graduate Center doctoral students in any field for a 2023-2024 fellowships. Doctoral Fellows are at the heart of the Futures Initiative, and the work we do is designed to support our mission and the professional goals of every Fellow. Our past Fellows have gone on to do meaningful, inspiring work, both in the academy and beyond. Futures Initiative Fellowships offer a minimum total compensation of approximately $29,374 for the academic year. The FI Fellowship has two components: a graduate assistant B appointment and a financial aid fellowship.

There are five new openings: Web Content Manager, Fellow-in-Residence HASTAC Scholars Co-Director RA to FI Founder & Faculty Co-Chair, Cathy N. Davidson RA to FI Faculty Member Outreach Manager. Graduate Center doctoral students may apply for more than one position. Applicants who have previously applied to FI without an accepted offer are welcome to re-apply. RAC Spring 23 Course Fellowship Opportunity in Applied History/Public History

The Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at the CUNY Graduate Center is offering up to eight $1,250 fellowships for participants in a Spring 2023 course developed in collaboration with the Rockefeller Archive Center on “Twentieth Century American Foundations.” Information about the Archive Center’s holdings and finding aid are available at https://rockarch.org/. Candidates should submit a one-page description of their research topic and how it relates to their more general research interests. Submissions should be sent as a single PDF file with materials arranged as follows: (1) cover sheet; (2) project description; (3) brief statement about why the applicant is interested in the fellowship in terms of their larger career goals; (4) a resumé or CV; (5) a writing sample or other documentation (if any). Short-Term International Fellowship in Japan

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and RFCUNY International Fellowship for Research in Japan (short-term) provides opportunities for pre/post-doctoral researchers from the US to conduct under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. Institute for Research on the African Diaspora in the Americas and the Caribbean (IRADAC) Fellowship

The IRADAC Fellowship provides institutional and intellectual support for seven Ph.D. candidates at the dissertation writing stage. Organized around an interdisciplinary seminar, the IRADAC Fellowship offers sustained support among scholars working on any area of the African Diaspora. During the academic year, fellows will have the opportunity to take advantage of mentoring, professional development, and editorial feedback on their dissertation projects while participating in a weekly seminar designed to keep the participants on a regular writing schedule. Graduate Center Dissertation Fellowship

The Graduate Center Dissertation Fellowship Competition is a yearly competition for Level III students who plan to be at the writing stage during the following academic year. Students can apply for a number of different dissertation fellowships (both general and specialized) using the same application. Awards are made as funds become available. ERI Knickerbocker Archival Research Grant in American Studies

The Early Research Initiative Knickerbocker Award for Archival Research in American Studies is designed to support doctoral students whose projects necessitate work in archives, repositories, and special collections (public and private) during the summer of 2023. Particular attention will be given to research projects that are interdisciplinary in nature. Students need not be members of the American Studies Certificate Program in order to apply, but their research must intersect with American Studies (broadly construed) in some discernible way.

The Early Research Initiative Award for Archival Research in African American and African Diaspora Studies will support doctoral students for work in archives, repositories, and special collections (public and private) during the summer of 2023 that focuses directly on the history, society, and culture of Africans and persons of African descent.  Particular attention will be given to research projects that are interdisciplinary in nature.  In addition to the general requirements for Early Research Initiative Awards for Archival Research, successful candidates for the African American and African Diaspora Studies Award will be required to organize and participate in a roundtable discussion of “African Diaspora Studies and the Archive.” If you have questions, please contact Rachel Sponzo at rsponzo@gc.cuny.edu. ​​More information can be found here.

Doctoral Student Research Grant (DSRG)

Through the Doctoral Student Research Grant (DSRG) program, Graduate Center doctoral students in years 2 through 6 are eligible for individual awards of up to $1,500, which can be spent on expenses such as conference and research travel, compensation for human subjects, and more. This program is excellent preparation for any major grant opportunities you may apply for later in your career.

CUNY/Schomburg Archival Dissertation Fellowship

The Schomburg Archival Dissertation Fellowship will be awarded to a student in any field of the humanities or social sciences who will significantly gain from an academic year in residency at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.  While in residence fellows will participate in bi-weekly seminar meetings of the Schomburg Scholars-in-Residence Program and will receive access to office space and a computer.  Of particular interest are interdisciplinary dissertations that treat some significant aspect of the African Diaspora, including the culture and history of African Americans, and that draw from the specific collections of The Schomburg Center.  Fellows will deliver a public lecture about their projects in the spring of the award year. Depending on developments with COVID-19, this fellowship could be partly remote.  The Schomburg award provides a financial aid fellowship of $25,000 and covers in-state tuition. Provost’s Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship

This program seeks to facilitate the transition from coursework to advanced individualized research. It is geared toward Level II students and awards $4,000 to conduct summer research. Recipients will undertake such activities including, but not limited to, initial field work, preliminary data collection, travel related to research, supplementary training in methods or techniques, or specialized language instruction.
